Self drive by road Whangarei is a good stop off point en route from Auckland up to the Bay of Islands if you wish to break up the journey.
Distance from Auckland to Whangarei is 162 km (101 miles) and takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.
Whangarei to Paihia, Bay of Islands is 71km (44 miles) and takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
Air services There is a domestic airport in Whangarei located 5 – 10 minutes from the city. A shuttle service is available for all flights.
