Taupo is a busy year round tourist resort, a popular lake destination with locals during summer and skiers during winter. The town is nestled on the edge of the picturesque Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest volcanic lake.
Geothermal landscapes and hot springs appear in several places around the Lake, which is now an extinct volcanic crater.
At the southern end of the lake, Tongariro National Park offers many hiking trails and the excellent Tongariro Crossing one day hike. Nearby Turangi is the place for exceptional rainbow and brown trout fishing.

Access to Tongariro National Park
There are roads surrounding the park linking the main areas and the skifields.
The main trunk railway line runs through the townships of the National Park and regular buses run from Ohakune and Turangi.
