Kaikoura is a pleasant seaside town and a good half way point between Picton and Christchurch on a self drive tour. The drive along the Kaikoura Coast is spectacular in itself. Spend a couple of days if you can so you can enjoy the beautiful surrounding mountain and ocean setting and of course do some of the great activities on offer.
Marine activities are plentiful and Whale Watching is a must when in Kaikoura, these famous excursions can be made by boat or airplane. Swimming with dolphins, kayaking with seals, marine tours and fishing are but a few other treats. Local wineries, walks and gardens and a good selection of local cafes, shops and restaurants are a nice non marine alternative. The rugged coast line and wild sea are a highlight of this area.

Diving, snorkelling, off road 4 wheel drive and quad biking adventure, rafting, cave tours, dolphin swimming, seal swimming, sky diving, deep sea fishing tours.
Moderate activities
A round of golf at the local Kowhai Links course, a marine tour including albatross, dolphin and seal viewing, fishing tour, local scenic walks, walk to Historic Fyffe House, horse trekking at Fyffe View Adventure Park.
Relaxing activities
Take a scenic flight, half day Maori cultural tour, visit a local garden and lavender farm, tour Historic Fyffe House and the remains of the old whaling station, stroll the many galleries for local art, craft and sculpture, eat drink at many local cafs and restaurants, visit a local winery.
Children and young families
Stroll the rocky shore and spot seals, (the sea is not safe for swimming) visit the Farm Park for hands on farm animal experience. Horse trekking at Fyffe View Adventure Park.

Train Services
The Tranz Coastal Train runs from Picton through Kaikoura to Christchurch. This excellent trip winds along the Kaikoura Coast line for excellent ocean views of marine life and travels through many tunnels.Schedules are arranged to meet with departures and arrivals of the Interislander ferry in Picton.
