Christchurch, New Zealand is a compact city set on the vast Canterbury Plains, providing a perfect base for a long or short stay. To the west are the towering peaks of the Southern Alps and to the East the broad Pacific Ocean.
The original settlers in the region were Moa hunting Maoris who drove the huge flightless bird to extinction. Then came the Europeans with their vision of creating a little bit of England on the edge of the South Pacific. The resulting city is an interesting fusion of two hemispheres.
